At Cheltenham Hackspace, we are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment where all members feel safe to collaborate, create, and explore. This policy outlines our expectations to ensure that Cheltenham Hackspace remains a safe space for everyone, regardless of their background, identity, or experience level.
1. Respectful Communication
All members are expected to communicate respectfully, both in person and online. Harassment, discrimination, bullying, or offensive behavior will not be tolerated in any form.
Listen to others and value their opinions.
Use inclusive language that respects all gender identities, ethnicities, abilities, and backgrounds.
Constructive feedback is encouraged, but make it respectful and relevant.
2. Harassment-Free Environment
Harassment of any kind – verbal, physical, or otherwise – is strictly prohibited. This includes but is not limited to:
Offensive comments related to gender, sexual orientation, race, disability, or religion.
Unwanted sexual attention, advances, or inappropriate comments.
Any behaviour that intentionally intimidates, threatens, or demeans others. We’re here to build cool things and have fun.
3. Consent and Boundaries
Respect other members' personal space and property. Always ask for consent before touching or using someone else’s tools, projects, or materials. Consent can always be revoked freely, at any time.
4. Inclusivity
Cheltenham Hackspace is dedicated to ensuring an inclusive environment where people from all backgrounds feel welcome. This includes:
Doing our best to create a space that is accessible for all members, including those with disabilities.
Embracing diversity in all forms, including gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, and socioeconomic background.
Offering support to new members and creating an environment that encourages learning and growth.
5. Accountability
All members are responsible for their actions and behaviour. If someone’s actions make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, report it to a member of the Hackspace management team.
6. Zero Tolerance for Retaliation
Retaliation against anyone who reports inappropriate behaviour or violates this policy is unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action. We believe that nobody should be punished for speaking up.
7. Conflict Resolution
If conflicts arise, they should be addressed calmly and respectfully. When resolving issues, be open to feedback and willing to listen to all sides.
8. Consequences of Violating This Policy
Violating this policy may result in actions including:
Verbal warnings.
Temporary suspension from Cheltenham Hackspace.
Permanent removal from the Hackspace community.
9. Activities Outside Cheltenham Hackspace
Cheltenham Hackspace is only responsible for maintaining a safe and inclusive environment within the physical and virtual boundaries of the Hackspace itself (e.g., our premises, workshops, on or offsite events, and official online platforms). We are not responsible for the behaviour, actions, or interactions of members that occur outside of these spaces.
If you choose to socialise, collaborate, or interact with other members outside of official Cheltenham Hackspace activities, it's your task to ensure that those interactions are appropriate and respectful.
Any disputes or issues that arise outside of Hackspace activities are not our responsibility, and we do not commit to mediate or intervene unless such conduct directly impacts the safety or wellbeing of members within our space.
